400 HoopStars to play in Stadelman's Labor Day tourney
September 4, 2015
For Immediate Release
ROCKFORD -- As many as 400 young basketball enthusiasts are expected to compete Monday, September 7, in Senator Stadelman's HoopStars, a free 3-on-3 tournament at Davis Park. The expected turnout is double the number of boys and girls in third through eighth grades who played in 2014.
"The purpose of the tournament is to provide children, especially those from inner-city neighborhoods, with a positive, no-cost activity on the end-of-summer holiday," said Stadelman, who launched the HoopStars event during his freshman year in the Illinois Senate in 2013. "Basketball has brought a great deal of joy to my life, and I'm grateful to be able to pay that forward."
Senator Stadelman is available for media interviews during the event.
Ninety teams were signed up for the tournament Friday morning, with players continuing to enter throughout the day. The crowd of spectators could exceed 1,000.
Walk-ins are accepted on game day. Play starts at noon and should last for approximately six hours.
Senator Stadelman's HoopStars takes place within the Rockford United Labor picnic where children can enjoy free rides and games. ComEd, Comcast, AT&T and the Rockford Park District are also event partners.
